marbles, shattered marbles, cracked marbles, marble jewellery

I just love shiny and sparkly things (apart from mirrored furniture – it’s just too much effort to keep those fingerprints off!..). And I’m not talking expensive diamonds. Anything that sparkles in the light will do.

So when I found some marbles lying around the house recently it was a great opportunity to make some cracked marbles and turn them into a necklace. I’m really pleased with the results and wanted to share it with you. This is a great fun, easy and cheap way to make your own jewellery. Here’s how to do it:

What do you need for oven baked marbles?

Here’s what to do with your marbles

Put your marbles in a heatproof dish

Turn your oven to 500 Fahrenheit (260 Celsius). Take a heatproof bowl and once the oven has reached the correct temperature, add your dish with marbles to the oven. “Bake” for 20 minutes

When the marbles are nearly done, fill a bowl with ice water. Add plenty of ice cubes to make the water freezing cold .. think ice bucket challenge!

After 20 minutes in the oven plunge the marbles straight from the oven into the freezing cold water. You will hear the crackling as they hit the water. See how sparkly they look?!

Leave to cool in the water for about 5 minutes and then take them out of the bowl.

If the marbles have not cracked enough, repeat the process. You may want to let them reach normal “room temperature” again before putting them back in the oven as they may shatter if there’s too much stress on the marbles.

How pretty does that look?

Adding the bead cap

Get a bead cap and eye pin

Put the eye pin through the cap so that the blunted end stops it from going all the way through (see photo)

Cut the eye pin with the pliers, leaving enough room for the wire to make a loop.

Bend the wire around the pliers to form a loop.

Use the pliers to push the ends together and close the loop

Using some strong craft glue or superglue, glue the bead cap to the top of the marble. Whatever glue you’re using, make sure it dries clear.

And it’s as easy as that. Add a necklace or earrings to create different sets that match your outfits.
